LASG Urges Students to Shun Drug Abuse, Launches Statewide School Campaign

The Lagos State Government has called on students across the state to steer clear of drug abuse in order to safeguard their future and fulfil their potential.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, made the appeal during the Official Flag-Off Ceremony and Sensitisation Campaign Against Drug Abuse in Schools, held on Thursday at Government Girls’ College, Agege.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed concern over rising statistics showing an increasing number of young people—students included—falling into substance abuse, a trend she described as a major threat to their development and life aspirations.

“As the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, this School Advocacy Campaign Against Drug Abuse speaks directly to the heart of our vision—to create a safe learning environment where every student can thrive without the shadow of drugs,” she said. “Every young person carries a dream to be great and make a difference, but that dream can only survive when the mind is clear, the body is healthy, and the heart is strong. Unfortunately, one of the biggest enemies of those dreams is drug abuse.”

She urged students to remain focused on their academics, embrace self-discipline and maintain confidence in their ability to achieve success despite challenges.

Also speaking at the event, Rev. Dr. Dele Ajayi, Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, and Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary Dr. Idowu Olufunke Oyetola, represented by Mrs. Maria Olufunmilayo Ojo, advised students to avoid drug abuse to secure a bright and promising future that would bring pride to their families and the nation.

Resource persons Dr. Mariam Ibrahim, Mrs. Bolanle Idowu and Aminat Yusuf educated the students on “The Dangers of Drug Abuse” and “Understanding the Legal Consequences of Drug Abuse,” stressing the long-lasting physical, psychological, and legal damage substance abuse can cause.

The school advocacy campaign is a flagship initiative of the Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse (LASKADA), a unit under the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. Led by Mr. Lukmon Kotun, the programme aims to educate, empower, engage and protect young people through widespread awareness campaigns that encourage them to say No to drugs and Yes to life.
