TCIPC SHINES: AS COMPTROLLER ONYEKKA RAKES IN ₦1.45 TRILLION IN 11 MONTHS, WINS TWO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS
By Ambrose Obioma Okehi
The Tin Can Island Port Command (TCIPC) of the Nigeria Customs Service is riding high on a wave of success, thanks to the leadership of Comptroller Frank Onyeka. The Command has recorded a staggering ₦1.45 trillion in revenue from January to November 2025, a testament to Onyeka's expertise in revenue generation and trade facilitation.
The impressive revenue figure is a result of the Command's relentless focus on revenue optimization and trade facilitation. Despite the challenges posed by the transition from NICIS 11 to the Unified Customs Management System (B'Odogwu software platform), TCIPC has performed impressively well. In November alone, the Command generated ₦135.21 billion, surpassing the ₦120.19 billion recorded in November 2024. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the Command's ability to adapt to new systems and processes.
TCIPC's success extends beyond revenue generation. The Command has made significant strides in anti-smuggling efforts, seizing illicit substances worth ₦5.3 billion in October. The seized goods included Cannabis indica, Methamphetamine, and other hard drugs, which were cleverly concealed in containers imported to the Port. Onyeka's leadership has fostered a culture of transparency and accountability, leveraging tools like the Advance Ruling System and Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme to drive efficiency.
The Command's outstanding performance has earned it two prestigious awards at the Comptroller-General of Customs Conference: Best in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Special Award in B'Odogwu. These accolades recognize TCIPC's commitment to excellence and contribution to national development. The awards are a testament to the Command's dedication to serving the nation and promoting economic growth.
Onyeka's approach to leadership has been instrumental in TCIPC's success. He has prioritized stakeholder engagement, dismantling operational bottlenecks and streamlining processes. The Command's focus on trade facilitation and revenue generation has created a conducive environment for legitimate traders, while making it increasingly difficult for illicit traders to operate. The stakeholders are now more than ever before complying, and the Command has made the place rather uninhabitable for illegitimate traders.
The Command has also improved trade facilitation and reduced clearance times, enhanced security measures, including advanced scanning technology and surveillance, and strengthened partnerships with stakeholders, including shipping companies and sister agencies. The introduction of the one-stop-shop, the national single window project, which comes up next January, is expected to further streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
As TCIPC marks a new milestone, stakeholders are optimistic about the Command's future prospects. With Onyeka at the helm, TCIPC is poised to unlock its full potential, block revenue leaks, and drive national development. Comptroller Frank Onyeka is an advocate of trade facilitation while keeping his gaze on the protection of the national economy and revenue generation. His leadership has set a new standard for excellence in customs administration, and TCIPC is set to continue its success story.
The TCIPC team is elated about the awards and the recognition of their hard work. As one officer put it, "This has been an incredibly record-breaking year, despite the apparent hitches that occurred while transitioning from the NICIS 11 to the B'Odogwu software platform. It has been a remarkable year, and this has been crowned with the awards at the CGC's Conference last week." The Command is committed to sustaining its momentum and achieving even greater heights in the future.
