” Badagry Women Demand Governorship Slot in Lagos, Call for Equity and Inclusion

Image
By oluwaseyi fadoro  Women from the Badagry Federation in Lagos State have called for equity, justice, and greater political inclusion, urging that the state’s governorship seat be zoned to their region in future elections. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the group—comprising community leaders, market women, and key stakeholders—presented their demand as a principled appeal rooted in fairness and democratic values rather than protest. “Today, we rise—not in anger but in conviction; not in protest but in purpose,” the women declared in a jointly delivered statement, emphasizing their roles as mothers, community builders, and custodians of societal values. They argued that their call reflects the aspirations of both present and future generations, while questioning the long-standing political structure in Lagos State. According to the group, since the state’s creation in 1967, Badagry Federation has yet to produce a governor. “Can Lagos truly claim fairness if one...

AMVCA 12 Nominee List is a Wake-Up Call for the Film Industry

Image
The nominee announcement on Sunday has officially kicked off the countdown to the 12th AMVCAs, and as expected, the conversation is split between celebration and the inevitable debate over who didn't make the cut. While previous years were often dominated by a few blockbusters with double-digit nominations, the 2026 field is defined by how spread out the talent is. With Gingerrr and The Herd leading with nine nominations each, and To Kill A Monkey following with eight, the race to May 9th is wide open. This year’s list shows a clear shift in how African cinema is being viewed. While the AMVCAs have always stood for excellence, this 12th edition has moved toward a much stricter evaluation of craft that looks past how popular a project is on social media. Under the leadership of veteran actress Joke Silva as Head Judge, the message from the organisers is clear: the bar for entry has become more specialised. In an era where trending on social media is often mistaken for techn...

When 8 million Customers Trust You, Safety Cannot Be an Afterthought

Nigeria’s digital banking revolution is raising the stakes for consumer trust.  The question is whether the industry is rising to meet them. Nigeria’s relationship with digital banking has changed almost beyond recognition in a decade. Where cash once dominated every transaction, from the roadside market to the corporate boardroom, mobile apps, instant transfers and USSD codes have reshaped how tens of millions of Nigerians interact with their money every single day. The figures speak for themselves: point-of-sale transactions surged to a record N18 trillion in 2024, a 69 per cent increase from the year before, and the number of POS terminals in operation more than doubled to 5.5 million. Mobile banking is now the most widely used digital financial service in the country, with four in five users having accessed it within any given 90-day window. This is, by any honest measure, an extraordinary story of financial inclusion and technological adoption. But it is an incomplete s...
