NGO establishes free art school for vulnerable girls in Lagos


 




Dream Catcher Academy, an NGO, on Friday in Lagos inaugurated a free art school hostel to nurture vulnerable young girls to build their talent through arts.


The .news Gist reports that the school, established in 2014 with 10 wards, now has a hostel to accommodate about 60 students.


The school, situated at Elepe area of Ikorodu, has about 30 children from age of seven and above, is being supported by AFRODROIDS


Speaking during the inauguration, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Education, Mrs Adetola Salau, commended the founder on her initiative in taking vulnerable children out of the street.


She said that it was necessary to promote art and music as a very important learning process in schools.


The SSA said that it was disturbing that most schools were excluding art programmes from their curricular, adding that arts programmes highlighted the humanity and creative element in human.


She advised both teachers and the students to continue to keep on the good work and achieve their dreams.


“I am here in my capacity as the SSA and also to represent Ministry of Education to being the good wishes of the Hon. Commissioner for education.


“I want to deliver on the governor’s desires and good wishes on programmes that centres around and promotes quality education and well-being of our children.


“I am very excited at anything that is focused on ensuring that our children dream, hope and their future exceeding any limitations or obstacle.


“For the fact that it is a programme that is centred around girls, art and something that has been neglected for long,” she said.



Mrs Seyi Oluyole, Founder of the school, said that the idea was driven by her inability to achieve her dreams when she was very young with the talent for arts.


Oluyole said that there were ongoing plans to replicate the school in other parts of the country to enroll more vulnerable girls for formal and art education.


She said that as a non profit organisation, the academy got its support through selling merchandise, monetising the talents, partnering with organisations and artists that believe in their dreams.


Mr Owo Anietie, Founder of AFRODROIDS, urged spirited individuals and corporate organisations to support the ideas initiated by the NGO in taking out-of-school children off the street and training the girl child to achieve their dreams as well as discover talents.


Anietie said his organisation would continue to support any idea that would better the lives of the vulnerable in our society through arts.


In her testimony, Kehinde Oluwabunmi, a student, said:  “My school has given me the opportunity to meet the Governor of Lagos State, the Vice President of Nigeria and lots of celebrities.”

Shettima Advice Couple on Preserving Sanctity of Marriage

  The Vice President,of Nigeria Senator Kashim Shettima, has advice the young couples to always preserve the sanctity of marriage as enshrined in the holy books, especially the affirmation of its importance and sanctity in the Qur’an.
