YAWI Celebrates International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

 

Every 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, established in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly.

 

In a statement issued and signed by the  Executive Director Young and Woman Initiative, Ambassador Adebobola Agbeja which was made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital said the campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991.


Ambassador Agbeja said It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

 

She said the day is also known as Orange Day because the colour orange is worldly recognised by United Nation Women to symbolise a future without violence against women.


The theme for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2023 is "UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls"


Agbeja said “Be supportive, keep yourself, your family and community healthy and protected. Say no to any form of violence – including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual or economic violence. Nothing can be an excuse for violence against women."


She countinued "Awareness-raising is key to spreading the clear message of zero tolerance of all forms of violence against women and girls. It's also key to informing victims of their rights and the support services available to them". Ambassador Agbeja said
