Have Refrain From Offering Counsel To President Tinubu Administration Says Saunsi
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has announced his decision to refrain from offering further counsel to the administration of President Bola Tinubu regarding the nation’s economic challenges.
Speaking as chairman at the 21st Memorial Lecture in honour of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch in Lagos, the former Central Bank Governor expressed dissatisfaction with the government's approach to economic reforms and stated that he has withdrawn his support.
Sanusi revealed that while he had initially rendered assistance, he has chosen to desist from doing so, citing the administration's perceived mishandling of critical issues.
“I have decided not to speak on the economy or the reforms, nor to explain any aspects of them. To explain would be to aid this government, and I am unwilling to do so,” Sanusi declared.
He continued, “Although they are my friends, should they fail to act in a manner befitting of friendship, I too shall reciprocate. Therefore, I now observe their actions without interference. They lack credible individuals capable of articulating their policies to the public, but I shall not intervene.”
The former Emir emphasized the government’s responsibility to communicate its policies to the populace, stating, “It is their duty to elucidate to Nigerians the rationale behind the policies they have implemented.”
Sanusi attributed the present economic predicament to years of mismanagement, which he described as the inevitable outcome of sustained poor governance.
“What we endure today is, at least in part—though not entirely—the necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic stewardship,” he asserted.
Adopting a tone of detachment, Sanusi likened his current position to that of a spectator. “I now watch events unfold as though enjoying a film, with popcorn in hand. I am merely an observer, watching them navigate their challenges,” he remarked.
The memorial lecture was convened in tribute to the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, an eminent human rights lawyer and advocate for justice.
