NCC, FCCPC SIGN MOU ON LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR STAKEHOLDERS

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen consumer protection within the telecommunications sector.

The MoU was officially signed by the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, and the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, Aminu Maida, during a formal ceremony held at the FCCPC headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Maida described the MoU as a landmark initiative that establishes a strategic partnership between two pivotal regulatory bodies. He emphasised the shared commitment of both organisations to safeguard the interests of Nigerian consumers while fostering fair competition and innovation within the telecommunications industry.

“In an era of rapid technological advancement, collaboration between regulatory institutions is more essential than ever,” he stated. “The telecommunications sector is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic and social progress. As such, it is imperative to provide a level playing field for all stakeholders while protecting consumers who rely on dependable and affordable communication services.”

He further noted that the MoU reflects a shared vision of creating a transparent, competitive, and consumer-centric telecommunications industry. By working together, the NCC and FCCPC aim to eliminate regulatory uncertainties and provide clarity for stakeholders, all while contributing to the Federal Government's Ease of Doing Business agenda.

“Our joint efforts will address issues such as market abuses, violations of consumer rights, and the complexities of a digital economy. This partnership ensures harmonisation of our respective mandates for maximum impact,” Mr. Maida said.

He commended the FCCPC’s leadership for its dedication to consumer protection and praised the efforts of both organisations' teams in bringing the partnership to fruition. “This collaboration is poised to address present challenges and anticipate future needs, promoting innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector,” he concluded.

In his remarks, Mr. Bello highlighted the necessity of the MoU due to the overlapping regulatory roles of both commissions. He explained that such overlap provides a safety net, ensuring that consumer issues or regulatory violations are addressed effectively, even if one agency is unable to act.

Mr. Bello referenced Section 105 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which mandates cooperation and collaboration between the FCCPC and sector regulators. He underscored the importance of synergy in providing comprehensive oversight and consumer protection without conflict or duplication.

“The signing of this MoU today symbolises the alignment of two diligent government agencies, fulfilling legal requirements to close regulatory gaps in the telecommunications industry,” he remarked.

Both leaders expressed optimism that this collaboration will significantly benefit Nigerian consumers and enhance the telecommunications sector's overall efficiency and reliability.
