2025 Ministerial Press Briefing: LASODA Empowers Over 1,000 Persons with Disabilities through Financial Assistance and Skills Development

In the past year, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has directly empowered more than one thousand Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), through initiatives encompassing financial aid, skills acquisition, vocational tools provision, and access to healthcare.

This revelation was made by the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing. He affirmed that the interventions are in line with the THEMES+ Agenda of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which emphasises inclusive governance and ensures that no Lagosian is left behind, irrespective of physical ability or disability.

Among the salient initiatives highlighted by the Commissioner was the disbursement of thirty million naira (₦30,000,000) as financial support to various beneficiaries. This included 150 senior citizens living with disabilities, 100 vulnerable PWDs, as well as prominent disability advocacy organisations such as Dyslexia Nigeria, the National Association of the Blind, and the Down Syndrome Association.

In the realm of empowerment and entrepreneurship, Mr. Ogunlende disclosed that 100 PWDs received business training and registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). They were further supported with essential tools and equipment, including cookers, fish tanks, freezers, and sewing machines, to bolster their entrepreneurial endeavours.

He noted that civil servants with disabilities also benefited from targeted support, receiving motorised wheelchairs, scooters, laptops equipped with JAWS screen-reading software, and funding for prosthetic devices.

Further interventions encompassed the provision of free oral healthcare for children with disabilities, the distribution of manual wheelchairs and assistive devices, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of inclusive schools. These schools were additionally equipped with educational aids and learning tools.

Mr. Ogunlende also mentioned that LASODA hosted a variety of community-building and awareness programmes, including interactive quizzes, talent exhibitions, and an "Ability Expo" designed to showcase the remarkable intelligence and creativity of persons with disabilities.

He concluded by lauding the unwavering support of Governor Sanwo-Olu, remarking, “Lagos is setting the benchmark for inclusion. Our citizens with disabilities are not merely being supported; they are being empowered to lead, to innovate, and to inspire.”

This comprehensive approach underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
