Chief Solomon Chukwu Explains Party Primaries, Mobilization Efforts Ahead of Local Government Elections
Lagos, Nigeria (June 20, 2025): Chief Solomon Sunday Chukwu, the Otun Amuludun of Orile Agege Kingdom and the Enyiwarauzo I of Oposi Kingdom, has shed light on the party primaries process, stating that every candidate has a responsibility to canvas for votes, and that this was strictly adhered to in the recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries for the forthcoming local government elections.
In an interview, Chief Chukwu explained that the process occurs every four years, with aspirants purchasing nomination forms and making their case to party delegates. The ward delegates, alongside ward excos, vote for the councillorship candidates, while the local government excos elect the chairmanship candidate. According to him, he participated in the primaries at the party’s Acme secretariat.
“Every local government was represented by their excos, and we were given papers to fill out at our discretion for who we wanted to carry the party’s flag in the upcoming election,” said Chief Chukwu. “Nobody compelled us. We acted of our own free will.”
He explained that in Orile Agege, Mr. Dodo emerged as the candidate, while Mr. Tunde Azeez emerged in Agege Local Government.
“As an LG Exco, I was only approached by Dodo to canvas for my vote. Others neglected that responsibility. It is a lesson for aspiring politicians — if you can’t canvas votes from 25 excos, how will you convince millions of people in Agege? These candidates failed to do their homework,” he stated.
Responding to claims that certain leaders tried to manipulate the process, Chief Chukwu said: “The Speaker did not call me, nor send any of his aides to ask for my vote. I voted for the candidate who came to me openly, seeking support for his ambition.”
He further emphasized the role of ethnic communities in mobilizing for the APC in the forthcoming local government election slated for July 12, saying that as the Deputy Director of Ethnic Affairs for the state and the Leader of the Igbo Community in Orile Agege and Agege, he has been active in rallying the electorate.
“We have held meetings with Arewa leaders, the Seriki, Eze Ndigbo, and other ethnic representatives, reminding them to mobilize their people for the election. We’ve conducted door-to-door campaigns and met with the youth, reminding them that they are the future leaders and securing their commitment to a peaceful election,” he said.
Chief Chukwu expressed optimism about a massive turnout from the non‑Yoruba communities, stating, “I am confident that our people will come out en masse to vote for the APC on July 12
