Civil Society Groups Accuse El-Rufai of Misgovernance, Demand Accountability for Past Actions
The wo Kaduna-based civil society groups, the Northern Resistance Front and the Kaduna Discussion Circle, have jointly issued a strongly-worded statement condemning former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over what they describe as "a legacy of misgovernance, deception, and impunity."
The statement, titled “El-Rufai’s Insurmountable Setback and Phobia of Stark Reality,” was signed by Comrade Salisu Isa of the Northern Resistance Front and Comrade Danjuma Thomas Bahago, Chairman of the Kaduna Discussion Circle. It comes in response to a recent interview granted by El-Rufai on Channels Television, during which the former governor allegedly made disparaging remarks about the current administration of Governor Uba Sani.
The groups describe El-Rufai’s comments as “a coterie of lies and disinformation,” accusing him of orchestrating a “crisis of confidence” in the state for personal political gain.
"El-Rufai is experiencing a steep decline in political relevance, and this interview was nothing more than a desperate stunt to stay afloat," the statement alleges.
Allegations of Political Sabotage
In a series of scathing claims, the civil society groups assert that El-Rufai’s attacks on Governor Uba Sani stem from bitterness following his inability to secure a ministerial appointment in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet.
They also cited El-Rufai’s alleged failure during the recently concluded bye-elections in several Kaduna State constituencies, framing it as a major blow to his perceived influence in the region.
"The lost [sic] was a big blow to the ego of the accidental governor not only in the state but the entire North West Zone,” the statement reads.
Accusations of Past Misdeeds
The groups reiterated long-standing accusations against El-Rufai, including:
- Corruption and Racketeering: Alleged financial misconduct during his time at the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and as Governor of Kaduna State.
- Abuse of Power: Accusations of trampling on citizens' rights, disobeying court orders, and fostering insecurity.
- Fraudulent Privatization: A pointed reference to the failed privatization of NITEL under his leadership, calling the PENTASCOPE deal “a vampire feasting on our national patrimony.”
- Foreign Allegiances: Claims of clandestine meetings with "questionable figures" in Lebanon, Marrakesh, and a state bordering Niger Republic.
“El-Rufai is the nation’s most dangerous source of destabilization, disunity, impunity, lawlessness and disequilibrium,” the statement charged.
Uba Sani’s Loyalty Recounted
While the groups claim not to be acting as spokesmen for Governor Uba Sani, they heavily criticized El-Rufai for allegedly betraying someone who supported him through thick and thin.
They cited instances where Sani purportedly stood by El-Rufai, including during a failed telecom deal with Mubadala, and during El-Rufai’s earlier political travails in the Senate.
“Your penchant for bitterness and arrogance has crossed the line of decency,” the groups stated, referring to El-Ruf
