Lagos Govt Deepens Push for CNG Vehicles, Road Safety in Transport Sector

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to overhauling the transport and logistics sector through expanded deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and renewed emphasis on road safety.

At a stakeholders’ engagement held in Lagos,Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation,    Hon.         Sola Giwa, and the Senior Special Assistant on Transportation and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, outlined key achievements recorded under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

Giwa said the government is currently in discussions with the banking sector to widen financing options for transport operators, describing the governor’s sustained investment in clean mobility as transformational.

He revealed that the Presidential Initiative on CNG has already delivered 20 CNG buses to the state. Lagos has also received additional 50-seater CNG buses, including three newly delivered LPC 50-seater units just three months ago.

According to him, the introduction of the buses has cut transportation costs by at least 30%, offering relief to commuters.

Giwa added that the cumulative value of the state’s ongoing transport initiatives is projected to exceed ₦50 billion, underscoring the administration’s drive to modernize mobility infrastructure.

Adekoya, on his part, emphasized the government’s renewed focus on safety in the haulage and logistics sector. He announced that Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved mandatory substance-abuse tests for all truck drivers in Lagos, alongside free government-funded corrective eyeglasses for drivers diagnosed with vision impairment.

He further disclosed that the state has concluded plans to phase out old diesel trucks in favour of cleaner and safer alternatives.

“The days of container-laden trucks collapsing and causing needless fatalities are over. This administration is committed to ensuring Lagosians leave home and return safely,” Adekoya said.

The initiative—structured as an asset-purchase scheme in partnership with UBA Bank—will allow operators to acquire new trucks and repay through structured financing.

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Alhaji Usman Yusuf Lawal, commended the Sanwo-Olu administration for its support, citing other infrastructure projects such as the rail line and food hub initiatives.

He noted that discussions were still ongoing regarding the number of trucks to be replaced.

“Once the final cost of the new trucks is determined, we will review our current fleet and decide which units will give way for replacement. Our goal is to ensure safer, more efficient trucks on the roads,” he said.

The Chairman of NARTO Lagos State, Alhaji Kayode Okunowo, pledged the association’s cooperation with the government to build a safer and more coordinated logistics environment across the state.
