APC Ethics Chairman in Lagos Urges Improvement in Online Registration Exercise
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ethics Group in Lagos State and the Otun Amuludun of Orile Agege Kingdom, Chief Solomon Sunday Chukwu
, has described the ongoing APC online registration exercise as a positive initiative capable of helping the party accurately determine its membership strength.
Chief Chukwu made this known on Tuesday during a media chat with journalists at his office in Lagos.
According to him, while the intention behind the registration exercise is commendable, the party must urgently address the challenges being faced by members at registration centres to ensure the process is effective and trustworthy.
“The online registration is a good exercise because it will help the party to know the actual number of its members. However, the party needs to work on the process so that members who come out to register can get the full benefit of the exercise,” he said.
He lamented that many members are becoming discouraged due to inefficiencies at registration centres, noting that some registrants are not issued proof of registration after completing the process.
“With what is happening at the registration points, members are no longer encouraged to go back. We live in an environment where trust is lacking. The party has good intentions, but those handling the exercise are not doing their jobs well,” Chukwu stated.
He recalled experiences from previous elections where some party supporters were allegedly denied the opportunity to vote because of their ethnic names, particularly Igbo names. He said such experiences have heightened fears among members who now worry that the lack of proof of registration could again disenfranchise them in future party activities.
“During the last election, some people were not allowed to vote because of their names. Now, when they go to register and are not given proof, they believe they may be denied again when it matters most,” he explained.
Despite these challenges, Chief Chukwu said party leaders at the grassroots level have continued to mobilise and encourage members to participate in the registration exercise.
“We have not stopped. We are still going around, talking to our people and encouraging them to come out and register so that they can benefit from the party when the time comes,” he said.
On national leadership, Chief Chukwu expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he believes the president will complete a second term in office.
He praised Tinubu’s performance so far, noting that despite challenges, the administration has continued to make improvements.
“President Tinubu will complete his eight years because he has done very well in the past three years. He keeps improving, and things are gradually coming down. Before he finishes his first term, Nigerians will see enough reasons to vote for him again for another four years,” he added.
