LASTMA Arrests PMS Tanker Driver After Fatal Crash at Pokia Junction, Epe

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has apprehended the driver of an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker following a fatal road traffic collision that claimed the lives of a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road in Epe, Lagos State.

According to preliminary findings, the motorcyclist, who was conveying a male passenger, was travelling against traffic on a prohibited one-way route, in clear violation of traffic regulations, when the motorcycle was struck by the tanker, reportedly moving at high speed. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to the instantaneous death of both the rider and his passenger.

LASTMA officials swiftly responded to the incident, securing the scene to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety. The tanker driver was immediately taken into custody, while relevant security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were notified in line with established emergency response procedures.

The remains of the deceased victims, alongside the apprehended tanker driver, were subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Noforija Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

To ease traffic congestion and restore normal vehicular movement along the busy corridor, LASTMA operatives promptly evacuated the tanker from the roadway.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the crash as tragic and avoidable. He warned road users, particularly commercial motorcyclists, against flouting traffic laws, stressing the dangers of one-way driving and competing for right of way with heavy-duty vehicles.

“This unfortunate loss of lives was entirely avoidable. Had the motorcyclist remained within his lawful lane and observed moderate speed, this fatal incident would not have occurred,” Giwa said.

He reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to strengthening traffic law enforcement across the state, emphasizing that traffic regulations are designed to protect lives and property.

LASTMA also urged motorists and other road users to see traffic laws not as punitive measures but as essential safeguards for public safety and orderly coexistence on Lagos roads.
