Drivers Laud LASG as Free Eye Screening, Drug Tests, Recertification Training Begin

Commercial drivers in Lagos State have commended the Lagos State Government (LASG) following the commencement of a free eye screening and drug testing programme, alongside complimentary recertification training for 2,000 drivers, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and promote driver welfare.

The initiative was officially flagged off on Monday at the Lilypond Terminal, Ijora. Speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, said the programme would be implemented across four major driver parks, starting with Lilypond Terminal and extending to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Obalende, and Iyana Iba.

Adekoya explained that the programme is a social inclusion initiative under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, noting that commercial drivers play a vital role in the state’s economy. He stressed that safeguarding the health and wellbeing of drivers would significantly improve road safety for all users.

He further disclosed that the Governor approved free health checks for 10,000 drivers across the state, adding that 2,000 beneficiaries would also receive free recertification training through the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI).

In her remarks, the General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, said the institute was fully prepared to conduct the recertification training. She described drivers as key players in the logistics value chain, which informed the government’s decision to prioritize both their training and health.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Vision Spring, Mrs. Abimbola Ogundirahun, highlighted the importance of good eyesight for drivers, noting that poor vision could undermine road safety measures and increase the risk of accidents. She encouraged drivers to undergo regular eye examinations and commended the initiative for providing free eye screening and corrective eyeglasses to drivers diagnosed with vision defects.

Chairman of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Lagos Chapter, Alhaji Kayode Ogunowo, urged drivers to shun unsafe habits that could endanger their lives and those of other road users. He also appreciated the state government for facilitating credit schemes that enable truck owners to acquire Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks.

A representative of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Ms. Lolade Bobagun, said the bank was ready to offer banking services to drivers, including the issuance of free, branded ATM cards, with costs covered by the Lagos State Government.

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), led by Assistant Commander (Narcotic), Dick Mulikat Adunni, conducted substance abuse sensitization and administered free drug tests at the event. Drivers were cautioned against the use of illicit substances, which could impair vision, judgment, and overall road safety.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Education and Innovation, Mr. Tobi Idowu, representatives of transport unions, and key stakeholders in the transportation sector.
