Orile-Agege LCDA Launches “Fight for Asiwaju” Boxing Championship to Empower Youth, Discover Future Champions

In a bold effort to transform grassroots sports into a powerful tool for youth empowerment and social development, the Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Akinola Idowu, has unveiled a major boxing initiative aimed at discovering the next generation of international champions.
The programme, tagged “Fight for Asiwaju,” goes beyond a conventional sporting event. According to the council leadership, the championship is designed as a strategic platform to empower young talents, provide opportunities for local athletes, and add meaningful value to the lives of residents within the community.
Speaking on the initiative, Hon. Idowu emphasized that the project reflects the council’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for social change, youth engagement, and economic opportunity.
To ensure the success of the championship, the council has established a well-structured planning committee made up of experienced sports administrators and coaches with several years of expertise in grassroots boxing development.
The initiative also features inclusive planning, with direct collaboration between the leadership of the Orile-Agege Boxing Association and the Coaches Association to guarantee transparency, fairness, and professional organization.
Organizers disclosed that the championship will draw participation from more than 20 boxing gyms, with the capacity to host over 100 high-caliber boxers competing across different categories.
Beyond the competition itself, the council has committed to providing jerseys, boxing equipment, and a professionally organized platform that allows young fighters to showcase their skills while benefiting from structured athletic development.
Officials say the initiative marks a shift from the traditional “business as usual” approach to a more organized “business of sports” model—one that prioritizes athlete welfare, talent development, and long-term opportunities for young people.
As the “Fight for Asiwaju” championship prepares to kick off, attention from the community, Lagos State authorities, and the Federal Government is now focused on Orile-Agege, with many anticipating the emergence of new boxing stars who could represent Nigeria on the global stage.
