Odua People’s Congress New Era Elders Reject Tenure Extension for Sadam-Led Executives

The Elders’ Council of the Odua People’s Congress New Era has distanced itself from a purported meeting that approved the extension of tenure for the Alhaji Rasaq Balogun Arogundade, popularly known as Sadam, led executives.

The council described the decision as null and void, insisting that it did not represent the position of the full council.

The leadership crisis within the Yoruba sociocultural group has continued to deepen following disagreements over the expiration of the eight-year tenure of the Sadam-led administration, which some leaders maintain ended on Friday, December 12, 2025.

Earlier in the week, a faction of the Elders’ Council reportedly announced a tenure extension that would allow Sadam to contest for a third term in office.

Those said to have endorsed the extension include Monsuru Akande, Ranti Akande, Adeshina Amusa, Lateef Ogungbayi, and Sadam himself.

Reacting to the development, the Secretary of the Elders’ Council, Kehinde Ogunyale, said the decision lacked legitimacy, stressing that five members could not make such a critical decision on behalf of a 20-member council.

Speaking on behalf of other council members, Ogunyale maintained that the meeting lacked the constitutional authority to extend the tenure of the executives.

He listed members who were absent from the meeting to include the late Olayinka Olowoporoku, Comrade Bayo Fabiyi, Alhaji Lateef Oshodi, Comrade Akinpelu Adesina, Comrade Olayiwola Ogunsolu, Comrade Olusanya Segun, Comrade Olusoji Folorunsho, Comrade Adebayo Sunday, Comrade Gbenga Egunlusi, Comrade Idowu Akintunde, Comrade Musa Oladipupo, and Chief Adeola Adeagbo.

Ogunyale further explained that Monsuru Akande, who presided over the meeting, is only serving in an acting capacity and that his appointment has yet to be ratified by the council.

According to him, many members of the Elders’ Council believe Sadam must first step down as President of OPC New Era in line with the provisions of the organisation’s constitution.

He added that other national executives had already stepped aside to enable the council set up a new leadership structure aimed at ensuring stability, due process, and adherence to constitutional provisions within the organisation.
