Group Proffers RTEAN As Alternative To Park Management System In Oyo



Following the various mayhem allegedly perpetuated by members of Park Management System (PMS) in various parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, concerned residents in Ibadan and its environ have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to replace the activities of the PMS with that of Road Transport Employer`s Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).  


It could be recalled that few weeks ago during the campaign of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for local government election in Ogbomoso, a  teenager was killed by a vehicle allegedly owned by a member of PMS.


Just few days ago, there was a clash between shop owners and members of PMS under the leadership of Mukaila Lamidi popularly known as Auxiliary where PMS members allegedly killed one Rahmon Azeez, son of the owner of the shopping complex.


As a result of these incidents and other complain from the commuters on the excesses of the PMS, the residents under the aegis of Vantage Peaceful Citizens (VPC) in a statement on Monday signed by its Coordinator, Adekunle Ajadi said it is high time for the Governor to give opportunity to RTEAN as a rightful owners of commercial vehicles across the country.


Ajadi explained that despite the fact that RTEAN have got a court judgment that empowered the union as a rightful and legal entity to oversee the activities of transportation sector, the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde is yet to give them operational approval.


According to the statement, "We as residents in Ibadan, we are tired of excesses of the members of Park Management System (PMS) under the leadership of Mukaila Lamidi a.k.a Auxiliary. 


"In other states of the South west, the control and management of transportation is saddled in the hands of Road Transport Employer`s Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), where the operational are in shifting. RTEAN as owner of the vehicles will operate for a week while NURTW as drivers will also operate the following week.


"This serves as a check to any of the union against excesses because if there any trouble within the period any of them are operating, government will know whom to hold responsible, the one found wanting can be sanctioned.


"But in Oyo state, the case is different, the Governor of the state came with PMS with ex-convict and expelled member of NURTW, Mukaila Lamidi as the Chairman.


"This negate the tenets, rules and regulations guiding the operation of transport anywhere in the country. We want to use this opportunity to appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde to look into this our demand so that Oyo state will start enjoy the peace being enjoyed in transportation sector during the tenure of immediate past Governor of the state".
