Fire Guts 22-Storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island

A major fire outbreak on Wednesday engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, prompting a large-scale emergency response from state and federal agencies.

According to a situation report released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire was already well developed when the Shark Response Team arrived at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that the fire originated from an apartment on the 4th floor of the building before spreading rapidly to other sections of the floor and escalating upward to the 6th floor, with the risk of further spread within the high-rise structure.

As of the time of reporting, the number of casualties could not be confirmed, as firefighting and rescue operations were still ongoing.

Emergency responders at the scene include LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Red Cross, and LRU Paramedics. LRU Fire Services have also been activated to support the operation.

A total of six fire trucks and a skylift have been deployed to combat the inferno, as responders work jointly to bring the situation under control and prevent further damage.

Recovery operations are ongoing, and authorities say updates will be provided as the situation develops.
