The Ijo Orunmila Adulawo has commended the Lagos and Ogun State Governments for recognising and promoting Yoruba cultural heritage through the observance of the 2026 Isese Day celebration.
In a statement signed by the Olori Oluwo and Spiritual Head of Ijo Orunmila Adulawo Worldwide, Chief Ifagbemi Ifajobi, and made available to journalists in Lagos, the organisation described the recognition of Isese Day as a significant step towards preserving the indigenous values, traditions and cultural identity of the Yoruba people.
The organisation noted that the celebration would provide an opportunity for younger generations to reconnect with their ancestral heritage and appreciate its continued relevance in contemporary society.
It said the decision by the two states to acknowledge the occasion reflected a growing appreciation of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage, while highlighting the role of traditional institutions in promoting peaceful coexistence, moral values and community development.
According to the organisation, Isese represents more than a cultural festival, as it encompasses indigenous knowledge, spirituality, ethics, history and communal values handed down from one generation to another.
The Ijo Orunmila Adulawo also urged other state governments and relevant authorities to support initiatives aimed at preserving Nigeria’s indigenous cultures, languages, traditions and historical institutions.
The organisation called on practitioners and celebrants to mark the occasion peacefully and responsibly, using the celebration to promote unity, tolerance, mutual respect and good character, known in Yoruba as Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́.
It extended warm greetings to traditional rulers, devotees, cultural organisations and members of the Yoruba community celebrating the 2026 Isese Day.
The organisation further prayed for peace, prosperity and stability in Lagos, Ogun and Nigeria as a whole, while advocating continued collaboration among government, traditional institutions and cultural stakeholders to safeguard the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“We salute the Lagos and Ogun State Governments for recognising the importance of our indigenous heritage. Isese is a living heritage, and its preservation is essential to the identity, unity and cultural continuity of our people,” the statement said.
