LASU Professor Enikuomehin to Deliver 127th Inaugural Lecture on AI and Future of Human Thought

Professor Oluwatoyin Ayokunle Enikuomehin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Professor of Computer Science at Lagos State University (LASU), is set to deliver the university’s 127th Inaugural Lecture on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

The lecture, scheduled for the Buba Marwa Auditorium, LASU, Ojo Campus, at 2:00 p.m., will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

Titled, “Thinking Machines and the Future of Thinking: Cyberphysicalism, Transformation of Human Thought, and the Emergence of an Artificial Intelligence Driven Algorithmic Society,” the lecture will examine the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on human cognition and the transformation of society in the digital age.

Professor Enikuomehin is expected to explore how intelligent machines are changing the way people think, learn, communicate, make decisions and interact with institutions, as algorithms become increasingly embedded in everyday life.

A major focus of the lecture will be Cyberphysicalism, an original theoretical framework developed by Professor Enikuomehin to explain the convergence of biological and computational intelligence and its implications for an increasingly algorithm-driven society.

According to the academic, the growing application of AI in areas such as education, healthcare, governance, commerce, cybersecurity, information retrieval and financial services is gradually creating a society in which algorithms play an increasingly significant role in shaping choices, opportunities and social realities.

The lecture will also raise critical questions about the future of human intelligence, creativity, autonomy and decision-making as AI systems become more sophisticated and integrated into modern life.

Professor Enikuomehin is regarded as a leading Nigerian scholar in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing and Digital Transformation, with more than two decades of research and professional experience spanning machine learning, information retrieval, cybersecurity, biomedical AI and Fuzzy Logic.

His contributions to digital transformation have also been reflected in his leadership as Director of the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology at LASU, during which the university received recognition as Nigeria’s most digitally advanced university in 2022 and 2023, as well as the university with the best use of technology for student services in 2024 and 2025.

The 127th Inaugural Lecture is particularly significant as it will be the first inaugural lecture from LASU’s Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, marking an important milestone in the intellectual and academic development of the faculty.

Inaugural lectures traditionally provide professors with an opportunity to present the body of scholarship developed throughout their academic careers, introduce original ideas and contribute new perspectives to their respective fields.

Professor Enikuomehin’s lecture is therefore expected to provide a platform for scholars, researchers, technology experts, policymakers, industry leaders, students and members of the public to engage with some of the most pressing questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence and the future of humanity.

The lecture is open to members of the public, with guests expected to be seated by 1:30 p.m.
