Lagos monarch dissolved market committees over food price increament

 




The Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, has dissolved market committees responsible for setting and increasing food prices at Agbalata International Market in Badagry following complaints from residents. The decision aims to end the practice of committees dictating the prices of goods brought by sellers, which has made foodstuffs unaffordable for many consumers.


The dissolution was announced at a meeting with market traders at the Akran's palace, where he emphasized that sellers should have the freedom to set their own prices without interference or extra charges from any committee. The Akran, represented by Chief Onu Osekan, stated that sellers in Badagry markets can now sell their products without being subject to additional fees from these committees.


The Akran noted that this move aligns with a broader effort to reduce prices in markets, taking inspiration from the Oni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. He mentioned that the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Olusegun Onilude, had also advocated for a reduction in foodstuff prices and requested the intervention of the traditional ruler.


To enforce this directive, selected chiefs from the palace will make formal announcements in the markets, and designated market chiefs will monitor compliance. The chiefs present at the meeting included Chief Anthony Hunji, Chief Senu Amosu, Chief Tunde Giro, and other notable leaders in the Badagry community.
