Lagos APC Orders Council Chairmen to Reside Within Their Jurisdictions or Face Sanctions

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has issued a stern directive mandating all chairmen of the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state to immediately relocate to their respective domains if they currently reside elsewhere. The party warned that failure to comply will attract severe sanctions.

This decision was announced on Tuesday by the Lagos State APC Chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, during a Stakeholders’ Special Engagement with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The meeting, held in preparation for the 2025 council elections scheduled for July 12, 2025, brought together key party stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for effective grassroots governance.

Ojelabi emphasised that council chairmen who reside outside the areas they govern often lose touch with the realities and developmental needs of their constituents. He stated that such absentee leadership hampers development and denies residents the dividends of democracy.

According to him, “Any chairman found to be living outside the council area where he or she governs will be sanctioned accordingly. We must ensure that our people feel the impact of governance at the grassroots level. Chairmen must be accessible and responsive to the needs of their communities.”

The APC’s directive is part of a broader effort to strengthen local governance and ensure that elected officials are fully committed to the development of their areas.

The 2025 local government elections are seen as a crucial test for the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate its hold on the grassroots in Lagos State.
