Adeleke Demands Release of ₦130bn LG Funds, Condemns Occupation of Osun Council Secretariats



Governor of Osun State, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, has demanded the immediate release of more than ₦130 billion in statutory allocations allegedly withheld from the state’s local governments, describing the situation as a grave threat to grassroots governance and workers’ welfare.

In a statewide broadcast on Monday, the governor condemned what he described as the illegal occupation of local government secretariats across the state by sacked chairmen and councillors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite subsisting court judgments nullifying their elections.

Adeleke said the Federal High Court in Osogbo removed the officials in November 2022, a decision affirmed by the Court of Appeal in February and June 2025. He stressed that fresh local government elections were conducted in line with court orders, leading to the swearing-in of new chairmen and councillors on February 23, 2025.

“The court removed them, not my administration,” the governor said, describing those currently occupying the secretariats as imposters with no legal mandate.

He accused former governor Gboyega Oyetola of backing the continued occupation, alleging that the police were acting on illegal directives to provide protection for the occupants. According to Adeleke, local government workers attempting to resume duty have faced harassment and intimidation from armed police officers and political thugs.

Central to the address was the alleged withholding of local government funds. The governor disclosed that since February 2025, statutory allocations amounting to about ₦130 billion have not been released to the legally recognised local government accounts.

He said the funds are needed to pay salaries of primary school teachers, nurses, primary healthcare workers in 332 centres, council staff, traditional councils, and retirees. Adeleke added that the state government has been forced to make “painful sacrifices” to keep salaries paid for nearly a year, a situation he described as unsustainable.

The governor also accused the United Bank for Africa (UBA) of allegedly allowing unauthorised persons to operate local government accounts, stating that senior bank officials involved are already facing criminal prosecution.

Calling for federal intervention, Adeleke appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the release of the withheld funds and safeguard democratic institutions. He maintained that the President was not involved in the alleged illegality.

“There is no provision in our Constitution for tenure elongation,” Adeleke said, framing the crisis as a test between constitutional order and impunity.

He urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the welfare of Osun citizens.
