A prominent Badagry elder, Pa Andwu Liadi Adio, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour longstanding assurances that Badagry Division will one day produce the Governor of Lagos State, as political agitation gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking with journalists at his residence in Badagry, the 93-year-old statesman expressed confidence that the President would fulfil what he described as a historic promise to the people of the division.

Adio noted that he has consistently advised youths in Badagry to remain calm and hopeful, emphasizing that fairness and equity would ultimately prevail for the area, which he said has been politically marginalized over the years.

Reflecting on past developments, he recalled that during his tenure as Lagos State governor, Tinubu requested a nominee from Badagry to serve in his administration. The division subsequently presented Olanrewaju Saka Shenayon, who was appointed Commissioner for Rural Development and Infrastructure during Tinubu’s first term in 1999.

According to Adio, Shenayon’s appointment debunks claims that Badagry lacks competent individuals capable of occupying key leadership positions in the state.

Also speaking, Shenayon dismissed concerns about the credentials of Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, describing him as a seasoned professional with a strong track record in private sector leadership and grassroots development. He insisted that Ajose’s non-political background should not be seen as a disadvantage.

In her remarks, former House of Representatives member Rafeequat Arinola Onabamiro said Ajose is well-prepared for leadership, citing his more than three decades of experience in the private sector.

Onabamiro added that several former Lagos governors, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola, and Akinwunmi Ambode, were not career politicians before assuming office, yet went on to deliver impactful governance.

She, however, expressed concern that since the creation of Lagos State in 1967, Badagry Division has not produced a military governor, deputy governor, minister, or secretary to the state government.

The stakeholders affirmed that Lagos West Senatorial District remains united in its support for Ajose’s potential candidacy, positioning him as a strong contender in the 2027 governorship race.
