40-Foot Truck Crushes Mini Bus, Injures Female POS Operator in Oshodi

A tragic road accident occurred on Monday at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi, Lagos, after a fully loaded 40-foot articulated truck lost control and overturned onto a commercial mini bus and nearby roadside shops, leaving a female Point of Sale (POS) operator severely injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the incident happened along the service lane beside the Police Tactical Team Station.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the container-laden truck reportedly lost control while in transit, causing the heavy-duty vehicle to veer off its lane before crashing violently onto a commercial mini shuttle bus and adjoining business outlets.

The impact of the crash created panic in the area as traders and residents scampered for safety.

A female POS operator who was seated under a roadside canopy sustained serious injuries to both legs during the incident. She was immediately rescued by officers of the Police Tactical Team stationed nearby and rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.

In response to the emergency, LASTMA officials swiftly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, secure the affected area and coordinate rescue and recovery operations alongside security agencies and other emergency responders.

The driver of the articulated truck was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA personnel and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Authorities also deployed a recovery tow truck to evacuate the overturned truck and the damaged mini bus from the scene, while operatives of the Orile-Iganmu Police Division commenced documentation and preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash.

Despite the severity of the accident and the damage recorded within the area, traffic movement around the corridor remained largely uninterrupted due to the prompt intervention of LASTMA officials.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged operators of articulated vehicles, fleet managers and logistics companies to ensure strict mechanical checks on heavy-duty trucks before embarking on trips.

He warned that poor maintenance of trucks, particularly faulty braking systems, continues to endanger lives and public infrastructure across Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki further called on transport operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations and operational discipline to prevent similar accidents on the roads.
