Lagos CAN Chairman, Pilgrims Commission Secretary Defends Tinubu, Cautions Clerics Against Divisive Remarks

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Lagos State and Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, Bishop Victor Adegbite, has defended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and cautioned religious leaders against making statements capable of creating division and tension in the country.

Speaking on recent comments reportedly made by former CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Bishop Adegbite said the Christian body in Nigeria does not support statements that could undermine national unity or create unnecessary political tension.

According to him, Christian leaders must exercise caution and responsibility in their public comments, especially as the nation gradually approaches another election season.

"We met last week in Abuja and there is nothing to support the kind of statements being attributed to some church leaders. We must fear God in whatever we do. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must work for peace and stability," he said.

The bishop recalled the political developments during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that Nigerians are aware of events that transpired between some religious leaders and the government at the time.

"We know what played out during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, and we know how money changed hands. We do not want to go into details now, but our message is clear: bishops and pastors should be careful and guided in their statements," he added.

Bishop Adegbite stressed that President Tinubu should be judged based on his performance and policies rather than political sentiments.

"Mr. President should not ask anyone to support him; let his work speak for him. But people should not deliberately bring down his government with misleading narratives.

The body of Christ in Nigeria and Lagos State will not accept that," he stated.

He further said many Christians across the country are praying for President Tinubu and acknowledged some of the administration's policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy, increased allocations to states, the student loan programme, healthcare initiatives, and road infrastructure projects.

"The President was able to remove fuel subsidy and increase revenue allocations to states significantly. Nigerians should ask their governors what they are doing with the additional funds coming from the Federal Government," he said.

Describing Tinubu as a God-fearing leader who has the welfare of Nigerians at heart, Bishop Adegbite expressed confidence that the President would continue to explain and showcase the achievements of his administration.

He also commended the Federal Government for supporting Christian-related projects, including the renovation of the Christian National Centre in Abuja.

"The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done a lot for the Christian community. The renovation of the Christian National Centre in Abuja is one example. The administration has also introduced policies that benefit students and improve healthcare and infrastructure," he noted.

The cleric urged Nigerians to remain prayerful, committed, and supportive of efforts aimed at tackling insecurity across the country.

He expressed optimism that security agencies would record greater successes against banditry and other criminal activities through enhanced intelligence cooperation with international partners.

"Nigeria remains one of the greatest countries in the world. Every nation faces challenges, but with prayer, unity, and commitment from all citizens, God will make Nigeria great again," Bishop Adegbite said.
