Lagos to Send Youth Ambassadors to Singapore for Leadership, Governance Study Tour

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to send selected Youth Ambassadors to the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore for a leadership and governance study tour aimed at equipping young leaders with global knowledge, innovative ideas, and practical public policy skills.

The study tour, scheduled to take place from July 6 to July 15, 2026, was unveiled during a press conference organised by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The initiative is designed to nurture a new generation of visionary and responsible leaders capable of contributing to the continued growth and transformation of Lagos State.

Speaking at the briefing, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, said the programme demonstrates the state government's commitment to youth empowerment, leadership development, and international exposure for young Lagosians.

According to him, participants will engage with global best practices in public policy, governance, leadership, and sustainable development while interacting with experts at one of the world's leading public policy institutions.

Ogunlende noted that Lagos, Africa's largest sub-national economy and one of the world's fastest-growing cities, requires young leaders with the competence, creativity, and strategic mindset to tackle emerging challenges and drive sustainable development.

He added that youth development remains a key priority of the administration, highlighting initiatives such as the Lagos State Youth Ambassadors Programme and the Ibile Youth Academy, which continue to identify, mentor, and empower young leaders across the state's five divisions.

The commissioner disclosed that the Singapore programme marks the fourth international learning tour organised by the ministry, following previous leadership engagements in Barcelona, Spain (2022), Helsinki, Finland (2024), and Queen's University, Kingston, Canada (2025).

He described Singapore as a global benchmark for effective governance, innovation, and sustainable urban development, noting that the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy is internationally recognised for excellence in public policy, governance, and leadership education.

"The programme will expose our youth ambassadors to practical lessons in public leadership, policy innovation, urban governance, technology-driven governance, sustainable development, and strategic nation-building," Ogunlende said.

He stressed that the objective is not to replicate foreign systems but to study successful models and adapt relevant lessons to address Lagos' unique development needs.

According to him, participants are expected to return with actionable policy ideas, innovative community projects, and practical solutions that will contribute to the state's continued progress.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, said the initiative reflects the government's sustained investment in preparing young people for future leadership roles.

She emphasised that leadership development extends beyond classroom learning and requires exposure to international best practices, innovative governance models, and practical policy experiences.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that beneficiaries of previous international youth development programmes have gone on to become community leaders, entrepreneurs, advocates, and agents of positive change across Lagos.

She also called on stakeholders and the media to support the initiative by showcasing the achievements of the state's youth development programmes and the opportunities being created for young people.

The Singapore study tour is expected to strengthen the leadership capacity of participating youth ambassadors and position them as catalysts for innovation, civic engagement, and sustainable development across Lagos State.
