Civil Society Coalition Petitions Police, Seeks Arrest and Prosecution of VDM Over Alleged Cyberstalking

 


A coalition of civil society organisations under the umbrella of the Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity, and Justice has submitted a petition to the Nigeria Police Force, calling for the immediate arrest, investigation and prosecution of social media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as VDM, over alleged cyberstalking, criminal defamation and incitement.

In the petition signed by the coalition's National Coordinator and Convener, Comrade James Okoronkwo, the group accused VDM of using his social media platforms to launch what it described as a sustained campaign of "false, malicious and defamatory" attacks against the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force.

The coalition alleged that the content shared by the social media influencer was designed to undermine the integrity of the police leadership, incite public hostility and erode confidence in the country's law enforcement institutions.

According to the petition, the alleged actions amount to offences under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, including cyberstalking, criminal defamation and conduct capable of causing a breach of public peace.

The group stated that it had already undertaken media campaigns to counter what it described as misleading narratives against the police but argued that public rebuttals alone were insufficient to address the situation.

Consequently, the coalition urged the police authorities to immediately arrest Martins Otse, carry out a comprehensive forensic investigation into his digital activities, identify any alleged collaborators or sponsors, and ensure his prompt prosecution before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The coalition maintained that taking legal action would serve as a deterrent to individuals who use social media to allegedly spread false information or attack public institutions.

It further described any attack on the integrity of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force as a matter with national security implications and pledged its continued support for the police through public advocacy.

As of the time of filing this report, Martins Otse (VDM) had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the petition, while the Nigeria Police Force had yet to issue an official statement on the coalition's demands
