Lagos Government Launches Blight to Bright Initiative 2.0 to Boost Youth Employment

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, has launched the second edition of its Apprenticeship Training Programme under the Blight to Bright Initiative 2.0, aimed at equipping youths with vocational skills and creating sustainable employment opportunities.

The programme was officially flagged off on Wednesday at the Agege Local Government Secretariat, with government officials, community leaders, training partners and beneficiaries in attendance.

Declaring the programme open, the Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, described the initiative as a transformative intervention designed to provide young people with practical vocational skills, promote self-reliance and inspire brighter futures.

He said the programme underscores the Lagos State Government's unwavering commitment to youth empowerment by ensuring that every resident, irrespective of background, has access to opportunities for personal and economic development.

Ajigbotafe commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his visionary leadership and sustained investment in skills development, entrepreneurship and employment. He also acknowledged the support of the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for his commitment to human capital development across the state.

According to the Commissioner, the Blight to Bright Initiative 2.0 is built on the belief that talent is universal, even when opportunities are not. He explained that the programme seeks to unlock the potential of young people through quality apprenticeship training, practical skills acquisition and mentorship that will prepare them for rewarding careers.

He disclosed that participants would receive hands-on training in vocational trades including fashion design, hairdressing, barbing, photography, digital printing, catering, electrical installation, plumbing, welding, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and several other marketable skills.

Ajigbotafe added that beneficiaries would also be equipped with entrepreneurship, business management and financial literacy skills to enable them establish sustainable businesses upon completion of the programme.

He urged the beneficiaries to remain committed, disciplined and focused throughout the training, noting that the skills acquired would positively transform their lives, families and communities.

The Commissioner also commended the master craftsmen, facilitators, training partners, community leaders and local government authorities for their collaboration in making the initiative a success, while reaffirming the government's commitment to building a more inclusive and prosperous Lagos where every young person has the opportunity to learn, earn and thrive.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Chairman of Agege Local Government,   Hon. Vinod Obasa, described the initiative as a laudable programme that would help reduce youth unemployment within the community.

He said the local government fully supports the initiative because it would engage unemployed youths in productive ventures, stressing that every young person deserves the opportunity to acquire skills, become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to society rather than remaining idle on the streets.

Also speaking, the programme consultant, Oluwatomisin Badewole, described the initiative as a remarkable success story.

She disclosed that the maiden edition of the programme trained 150 youths last year, adding that the number of beneficiaries has been doubled in the second edition to accommodate more young people across the state.

Badewole expressed confidence that the expanded programme would produce more skilled entrepreneurs and artisans capable of contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of Lagos State.
