Lagos Reaffirms Commitment to Road Safety, Urges Continuous Training for Driving School Operators

 


The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety through continuous training and education for driving school operators and instructors across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known while speaking at the 2026 Driving School Instructors and Operators Train-the-Trainer Workshop, themed: “Enhancing Road Safety through Continuous Training and Education of Driving School Operators in Lagos State.”

Osiyemi stressed the important role of driving schools in producing competent and responsible motorists, noting that they provide drivers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to navigate the roads safely.

He called for stricter instructor certification and the adoption of standardised training curricula, alongside rigorous testing, background checks, periodic re-licensing and continuous professional development for driving instructors.

According to him, such professional development should cover key areas including defensive driving, hazard perception, emerging vehicle technologies and changes in traffic laws and regulations.

The Commissioner also advocated regular refresher courses for driving instructors, noting that the increasing number of vehicles on Lagos roads makes continuous capacity building essential to preventing road crashes and reducing fatalities.

He maintained that strengthening the competence of driving school operators and instructors would contribute significantly to developing a safer and more responsible motoring culture across Lagos State.
