LJLA Alumni Council Bows Out After Building Foundation for Alumni Association

 



After two years of building structures, strengthening connections and extending the values of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy beyond its Fellowship programme, the inaugural Executive Council of the LJLA Alumni Association has formally bowed out of office.


The outgoing Council was celebrated on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Life After LJLA & Alumni Endowment Awards held in Ikeja, Lagos, where members were recognised for their service and contributions to the development of the Alumni Association.


Led by Mrs. Adepeju Balogun-Awe as Chairperson, the Council comprised Olakunle Charles Adegunoye, Vice Chairperson; Karimat Yakubu, Public Relations Officer; Oluwaferanmi Akinade, Financial Secretary; Funmi Osineye, Welfare Director; Stephen Okeowo, General Secretary; and Michael Folorunsho, Director of Programmes.


As the inaugural leadership of the Alumni Association, the Council’s tenure focused on establishing the structures needed to move the association from an idea into a functioning community for former Fellows.


Among its key achievements was the development of the Alumni Association’s constitution, alongside the creation of structures and systems to guide the association’s operations and strengthen engagement among alumni across different cohorts.


The Council also took the Academy’s leadership values beyond its alumni community through a mentorship initiative that reached more than 500 secondary school students across Education Districts 2 and 4.


The outgoing executives were formally honoured at the event by the Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, who presented each member with an Award of Distinguished Service in recognition of their dedication, commitment and contributions during their tenure.


The recognition formed part of an evening centred on the idea of life beyond the Fellowship. A panel of LJLA alumni shared experiences from their journeys after completing the programme, discussing the realities of transitioning into life beyond the Academy and the different ways the Fellowship has continued to influence their paths.


The event also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Alumni Association, as members elected a new Executive Council to take over from the inaugural leadership.


Alausa Babatunde was elected President, with Halimat Bello as Vice President. Other members of the new Council are Saheed Rahmon, General Secretary; Salami Mistura Adepeju, Public Relations Officer 1; Balogun Danjuma, Public Relations Officer 2; Aisha Lawal, Welfare Director; Evelyn Ayansola, Financial Secretary; Anuoluwapo Adebanjo, Director of Programmes; and Omowunmi Omoseyinde, Deputy Director of Programmes.


The transition marked more than a change in office. It represented the handover of an alumni community whose foundational systems, programmes and relationships were established during the tenure of the outgoing Council.


For the outgoing executives, the evening was therefore both a celebration and a farewell, providing an opportunity to reflect on the work undertaken since the formation of the Alumni Association and the community they leave behind.


The gathering brought together alumni and current Fellows from different cohorts, with the formal proceedings giving way to music, conversations, laughter and celebrations of the relationships forged through LJLA.


As the new Council assumes responsibility, the inaugural executives leave with the distinction of having laid the groundwork on which subsequent generations of LJLA alumni can build.
