NISCN Honours Lagos Safety Commission DG Lanre Mojola as First Senior Safety Advocate

The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has conferred its prestigious Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title on the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola.

Mojola was honoured for his contributions to the advancement of occupational health, safety and environmental (HSE) standards in Lagos State and Nigeria.

The National President of NISCN, Engr. John Obajimi, presented the letter of conferment to Mojola, describing the recognition as a testament to his visionary leadership, dedication and contributions to safety advocacy and regulation.

In a formal notification to the Lagos State Safety Commission DG, the National Executive Council and entire membership of NISCN said the honour recognised Mojola’s “visionary leadership, outstanding dedication and impactful contributions” to the development of occupational health, safety and environmental standards.

According to the council, Mojola’s leadership at the Lagos State Safety Commission has contributed to strengthening proactive safety regulation, promoting safety culture and enhancing institutional excellence.

NISCN also stated that Mojola is the first recipient of the Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title, and is therefore entitled to use the designation “SSA” before his name.

The council further described the conferment as the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

The recognition comes against the backdrop of several safety initiatives implemented by the Lagos State Safety Commission under Mojola’s leadership, covering occupational safety, emergency preparedness, public safety and risk management.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mojola led the commission’s safety assessment and auditing efforts as businesses, schools, religious institutions and hospitality establishments prepared to reopen. The commission introduced safety protocols and a registration process for establishments seeking approval to resume operations safely.

Under his leadership, the commission also institutionalised the 4Es safety framework — Evaluation, Education, Engagement and Enforcement — as an approach to identifying risks, educating stakeholders, engaging communities and enforcing safety regulations across both formal and informal sectors.

The commission has also intensified safety interventions in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector through training and monitoring of gas retailers, cylinder handlers and plant operators, with emphasis on preventing gas explosions and fire incidents.

In the education sector, the commission has promoted school safety programmes covering safety awareness, emergency preparedness, fire drills and risk assessments. Safety sensitisation has also been extended to artisans and workers in the informal sector, including market operators, mechanics, transport workers and construction workers.

Mojola’s administration has equally promoted professional safety training programmes aimed at improving workplace safety knowledge among operational personnel, managers and executives.

The commission continues to conduct safety inspections and risk assessments at high-risk facilities, including construction sites, industrial facilities, event venues and other commercial establishments, with sanctions imposed on establishments found to be non-compliant with safety requirements.

Its safety interventions have also covered food establishments and public events, where safety, hygiene, emergency preparedness and crowd-management measures are monitored.

During festive periods, the commission collaborates with relevant emergency and fire authorities to conduct safety campaigns in major commercial centres, while community-level emergency preparedness has been strengthened through initiatives involving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid and basic emergency-response training.

The conferment of the Senior Safety Advocate title further recognises Mojola’s role in promoting safety advocacy, regulatory compliance and a stronger safety culture across Lagos State and beyond.
