Sanwo-Olu Hails Tinubu’s Democratic Credentials, Says APC Can Lose Election Without ‘Federal Might’

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to democratic principles, saying the ruling party’s ability to lose a state election without interference is evidence of Nigeria’s maturing democracy.

Sanwo-Olu made the remarks on Thursday at the seventh annual lecture organised by Freedom Online at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, where he spoke on Nigeria’s democratic development and the 2027 general elections.

The governor cited the August 15 Osun State governorship election, in which the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, secured re-election, as an example of President Tinubu’s commitment to democratic values.

Adeleke, who contested under the platform of another political party, defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, by more than 60,000 votes.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the outcome demonstrated that opposition parties could compete and win elections even when the federal government was controlled by the ruling party.

He noted that President Tinubu subsequently congratulated Adeleke on his victory, describing the re-election as a “fitting assurance” that democracy would continue to thrive under his administration.

The governor also pointed to the President’s subsequent closed-door meeting with Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Tinubu reportedly urged the governor to work towards uniting the people of Osun State.

Sanwo-Olu said such developments represented a significant departure from an era when the influence of the federal government was allegedly deployed to secure electoral victories for ruling parties.

“There was a time in this country when ‘federal might’ was a phrase that a ruling party used without irony,” he said.

“Under this President, the ruling party can lose a state in the South-West in an election year, and the sky does not fall. That is what a maturing democracy looks like.”

The Lagos governor described Tinubu as a “lifelong democrat”, expressing confidence that the President was committed to leaving behind a stronger democratic system than he inherited.

“This President is a lifelong democrat, and he means to leave behind a stronger democracy than he inherited, not only for Nigerians but as an example to a continent that badly needs one,” Sanwo-Olu added.
