Adebayo Vows to End Public Funding of Politicians’ Lavish Lifestyles

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has vowed to end what he described as the wasteful use of public funds to finance the lavish lifestyles of political officeholders in Nigeria.

Adebayo said an SDP-led administration would redirect resources currently spent on luxury vehicles, bulletproof SUVs, chartered flights, government house renovations and extravagant official travels towards education, healthcare and critical national infrastructure.

The SDP presidential candidate made the declaration in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and signed by Comrade Mark Adebayo, Chief Media and Communications Advisor to the Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign.

He argued that Nigeria's economic hardship was not primarily caused by a lack of resources but by the mismanagement of public funds and the failure of successive administrations to prioritise human capital development.

"We will stop Nigerians from subsidising the lavish lifestyles of politicians," Adebayo declared.

He criticised what he described as a political culture in which public resources were disproportionately allocated to the comfort of government officials while millions of Nigerians struggled with rising living costs, fuel-related expenses and deteriorating public services.

According to him, successive budgets had channelled substantial public funds into executive privileges instead of investments capable of improving citizens' welfare and strengthening the economy.

Citing what the campaign described as fiscal estimates drawn from civil society tracking reports, national budget analyses and state-level implementation disclosures, Adebayo claimed that expenditure on political privileges and luxury items amounted to trillions of naira annually.

He further alleged that nearly ₦1 trillion was earmarked or spent across budget cycles on luxury utility vehicles, presidential fleet upgrades, government house renovations and regional empowerment schemes for political aides.

The SDP candidate also cited figures purportedly drawn from mid-2026 budget implementation updates, claiming that 33 state governments spent more than $300 million, approximately ₦410 billion, on governors' offices, government houses and executive travels within six months.

He argued that the alleged expenditure pointed to an annual state-level spending burden exceeding ₦1 trillion across the country's 36 states.

Adebayo also criticised the procurement of expensive armoured vehicles and luxury official fleets, alleging that some government agencies had made procurements worth billions of naira while state governments continued to purchase luxury vehicles outside standard appropriation bills.

He described such spending as wasteful, particularly at a time when many Nigerians were experiencing severe economic hardship.

The SDP presidential candidate maintained that an administration led by his party would eliminate what he characterised as financial leakages arising from excessive executive spending and reform public expenditure to ensure greater accountability.

He also pledged to eliminate unconstitutional vehicle allowances and channel public resources into functional infrastructure and essential social services.

According to Adebayo, four years would be sufficient for a determined and transparent administration to restructure public finances, reduce waste and establish a governance system that prioritised the needs of ordinary Nigerians.

He urged voters to reject politicians who, in his view, treated public funds as personal resources, calling instead for a political system built on public welfare, domestic production and transparent service delivery.

Adebayo reaffirmed the SDP's commitment to economic reforms that would ensure government spending delivered tangible benefits to citizens rather than sustaining the privileges of political officeholders.
