The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has called for a thorough, transparent and credible investigation into the recent incident in Niger State, stressing the need for accountability and stronger security institutions in Nigeria.

The group made the call on Friday at a press conference in Lagos on the state of the nation, where it addressed issues including human rights, insecurity, education, the economy and public accountability.

Speaking at the conference, CAIDOV Executive Director, Gbenga Soloki, said every incident involving loss of life or allegations of wrongdoing within a security institution must be subjected to an independent and credible investigation.

Soloki said accountability remained critical to sustaining public confidence in security agencies and other public institutions, stressing that government institutions must remain answerable to the people.

He urged the Federal Government, security agencies, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to work together to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture and restore greater public confidence in state institutions.

Also speaking, the President of Media for Equity and Good Governance, Rev. Femi Adepoju, called on the authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the Niger incident.

Adepoju stressed the need for investigators to establish the facts and carefully examine the original evidence surrounding the alleged offence, noting that a credible process would help prevent innocent persons from being wrongly punished.

Other speakers at the conference, including Ajayi Popoola and Nelson Ekujumi, both members of civil society organisations, also emphasised the importance of responsible and transparent action by the authorities, particularly in cases involving allegations of wrongdoing, loss of life and the exercise of security powers.

CAIDOV therefore urged relevant authorities and stakeholders to intensify efforts towards accountability, public safety and the protection of citizens, while working collectively to address the broader challenges confronting the country.
