Toluwanisings’ Death: Adewole Adebayo Blames Nigeria’s Failing Healthcare System

…Says Benin Republic Offers Better Medical Facilities and Emergency Services

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of popular gospel musician Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings, blaming Nigeria’s failing healthcare system for the tragedy.

Adebayo described Nigeria’s healthcare policy as “worse than poor”, lamenting that systemic failures and inadequate emergency medical services continue to cost the country the lives of promising young citizens.

In a statement signed by Comrade Mark Adebayo, Chief Adviser on Media and Communications to the Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign, the SDP presidential candidate alleged that Nigeria’s healthcare system had become dysfunctional, leaving many citizens vulnerable to preventable deaths.

He also claimed that neighbouring Benin Republic had superior medical facilities and emergency response services, noting that many Nigerians reportedly cross the border to seek medical treatment.

Toluwanisings reportedly collapsed at his apartment in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, less than 24 hours after delivering a ministration at a monthly worship concert.

According to reports and accounts attributed to the singer’s personal assistant, efforts to obtain emergency medical attention for him involved taking him to between seven and eight hospitals across Ibadan.

However, several facilities reportedly turned him away, with reasons including an ongoing doctors’ strike, inadequate medical personnel and the unavailability of functional emergency care.

The singer’s death has sparked widespread reactions, with social media activists, including VeryDarkMan, criticising the state of Nigeria’s public healthcare system and arguing that the tragedy could have been prevented if adequate emergency medical facilities had been available.

Reacting to the incident, Adebayo described the singer’s death as tragic and avoidable, insisting that the failure of the healthcare system had continued to expose Nigerians to unnecessary loss of life.

“I am very sad about this tragic but avoidable tragedy. Nigeria continues to lose its citizens simply because of a broken healthcare system or even an outright absence of one, especially emergency medical response. It is zero!” he said.

The SDP candidate questioned why Nigerians should have to travel abroad to access quality medical care, alleging that the country’s leadership had failed to prioritise the healthcare needs of ordinary citizens.

“You cannot believe that Benin Republic, a country that Nigeria is about 20 times its size and much less resourced than Nigeria, has one of the best medical facilities and personnel in West Africa.

“Many Nigerians go across the border to the Republic of Benin to receive medical treatment because if they remain in Nigeria, they will die avoidable deaths,” Adebayo stated.

He further criticised government officials for allegedly seeking medical treatment abroad while millions of Nigerians struggle to access basic healthcare services at home.

“The people in government don't care about providing functional healthcare for the people because if they suffer ordinary mosquito bite, they're running abroad for treatment. Meanwhile, Nigerians are dying in their hundreds daily of treatable diseases,” he said.

Describing the situation as deeply troubling, Adebayo said the country’s healthcare system had failed to protect citizens from preventable illnesses and medical emergencies.

“The system is, at best, dysfunctional. Now we have lost a growing young artiste with a more promising future to the cold hands of death due to the country's leadership carelessness. Nigeria has become a situation of the dead mourning the dead. So pathetic!” he added.

Adebayo concluded by extending his condolences to the late musician’s family, the Church and the wider music industry, expressing sympathy over the loss of a young artiste whose career, he said, held considerable promise.
