Sanwo-Olu, Oluremi Tinubu, Olopade, Others to Bag Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation Awards

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; veteran media practitioner, Elder Kayode Olopade; and June 12 democracy activist, Comrade Adewale Adeniyi Balogun, are among prominent Nigerians and institutions selected for recognition by the Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation.

The awards will recognise outstanding contributions to disability inclusion, democratic development, religious harmony, community advancement and responsible journalism.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Convener of the Foundation, Comrade Kehinde Oshilaja, and made available to journalists in Lagos and Abuja.

According to Oshilaja, the initiative is aimed at celebrating individuals and organisations whose activities and contributions have positively impacted society, particularly in promoting social inclusion, democratic participation, religious tolerance, public enlightenment and community development.

He explained that Senator Oluremi Tinubu was selected in recognition of her interventions in healthcare accessibility and economic empowerment, particularly programmes designed to support persons living with disabilities.

Among the initiatives highlighted by the Foundation is support for health insurance coverage for persons with disabilities, as well as empowerment programmes for wheelchair users.

The organisers also cited an intervention through which 100 wheelchair users reportedly received wheelchairs and financial assistance of ₦100,000 each.

Her legislative contributions, including the sponsorship of several bills during her years in the National Assembly, were also identified as reasons for the recognition.

Similarly, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be honoured for his administration's policies and interventions aimed at improving the welfare, inclusion and participation of persons living with disabilities in Lagos State.

The Foundation noted that recognising the two public officials underscores the importance of purposeful leadership and practical government interventions in addressing the challenges confronting vulnerable members of society.

In the religious category, Christian personalities selected for recognition include Apostolic Mother Olatunbosun and Kemi Ade John.

Muslim personalities on the list include Alhaji Abu Abiodun Oyebanji, Alhaji Raheem Olanrewaju Jaji and Chief Abiodun Kakawa.

Olopade, Media Organisations to Receive Recognition

The media category also features prominently, with veteran media practitioner, Elder Kayode Olopade, emerging as one of the major award recipients.

Olopade, who has served as the Foundation's Media Consultant for almost 15 years, is being recognised for his contributions to journalism and media development.

Other media organisations listed for the awards include The Nation, The Punch, Leadership Newspaper, Daily Sun, Radio Lagos, Bond FM, Adtoknews Online Publication and People's Voice, among others.

Individuals in the media category include Mr Peter Olayinka, Opeyemi Makinde and Gbenga Adewale.

Oshilaja explained that the recognition of media organisations and practitioners was intended to acknowledge the important role of professional journalism in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting informed public discourse and ensuring that issues affecting different segments of society receive adequate attention.

He stressed that a credible media remains a vital pillar of democratic governance through its responsibility to hold public institutions accountable, amplify citizens' concerns and provide balanced information on issues of public interest.

Osun, June 12 Activist Also Honoured

In another category, Osun State has been listed for recognition over what the organisers described as its impressive voter participation, noting the importance of citizens' involvement in electoral processes and the sustenance of democratic governance.

Also selected is Comrade Adewale Adeniyi Balogun for his contributions to the June 12 democratic struggle, a defining chapter in Nigeria's political history and its quest for democratic governance.

The Foundation noted that the June 12 struggle remains a significant reference point in Nigeria's democratic journey, particularly in the fight for electoral legitimacy, political accountability and respect for the will of the electorate.

Other personalities listed for recognition include Chief Awodiran Agboola and Chief Ifajobi Ifagbemi.

The diversity of the award recipients reflects the Foundation's commitment to recognising outstanding contributions across various sectors, including political leadership, disability advocacy, religious service, media professionalism, democratic activism and community development.

Beyond celebrating the awardees, the initiative is expected to stimulate conversations around inclusive governance, the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, religious tolerance, credible journalism and the preservation of democratic values.

Oshilaja maintained that recognising individuals and institutions making meaningful contributions in these areas would encourage greater public responsibility and strengthen commitment to programmes and initiatives that promote the collective interests of society.
