LAWMA BOSS ORDERS CLOSURE OF NON-COMPLIANT GARAGES AND PARKS ALONG THE MAZANMAZA–OJO–ORILE CORRIDOR OVER FLAGRANT ENVIRONMENTAL BREACHES.

In a firm assertion of regulatory authority and environmental guardianship, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) yesterday has ordered the sealing of all garages and motor parks operating along the Mazanmaza, Ojo to Orile axis for sustained and deliberate contravention of statutory waste management regulations.

The enforcement operation, executed by LAWMA’s Environmental Enforcement Unit, was precipitated by a deluge of formal complaints and petitions from conscientious and law-abiding residents who raised alarm over the habitual and indiscriminate disposal of refuse by operators and users of the affected facilities.

These unlawful activities culminated in the desecration of road setbacks, medians, street junctions and drainage infrastructures, thereby constituting serious environmental degradation, public health risks and traffic safety threats within the corridor.

Comprehensive investigations further revealed that the affected garages and parks failed to register with LAWMA-accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, in blatant violation of extant environmental sanitation laws, policies and operational frameworks governing waste disposal in Lagos State.

Notwithstanding a series of warnings, sensitisation campaigns and duly issued statutory notices served on the operators and users of the facilities, compliance remained obstinately absent.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the Authority’s unflinching commitment to preserving environmental orderliness and ecological sustainability across Lagos State.

He stressed unequivocally that no garage, motor park or commercial establishment would be allowed to function outside the purview of the law or compromise the collective environmental wellbeing of residents.

According to him, the sealed garages and parks will remain indefinitely shut and will not be reopened for public use until full, verifiable and sustained compliance with all applicable environmental regulations is achieved, including mandatory registration with LAWMA-approved PSP operators and strict adherence to prescribed waste disposal protocols.

The Managing Director further cautioned that LAWMA would not relent in escalating enforcement actions against individuals or organisations that persist in undermining the State’s waste management architecture, reiterating that environmental protection remains a collective civic obligation.

LAWMA therefore calls on residents, markets,  commercial operators and transport unions to demonstrate responsible environmental conduct by aligning fully with established waste management laws and cooperating seamlessly with PSP operators to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
