On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, a momentous celebration took place at Sabo, Ibadan. This event was made possible through a partnership between the local Zonta Clubs in Ibadan and various organizations committed to the empowerment and well-being of girls. The celebration was marked by a series of activities aimed at promoting girls' rights, leadership, and health.
The event commenced with enlightening talks on girls' rights, leadership, and health, delivered by esteemed speakers. Ambassador Agbeja Adebobola, Executive Director of Young and Woman Initiative (YAWI), eloquently addressed the importance of girls' rights. Additionally, YAWI's Adolescent Boot Camp Girls Volunteers were present to passionately advocate for the eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (EndFGM).
Menstrual hygiene, a critical aspect of girls' health, was discussed by Zontian Funmi Adegbile from Zonta Club 2, Ibadan. Leadership skills were also emphasized during the event, with Zontian Tayo Alabi from Zonta Club 1, Ibadan, leading an informative session.
Breast cancer awareness was a significant part of the day's proceedings, thanks to the participation of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) in Oyo State.
In a gesture of kindness and solidarity, foodstuffs and sanitary pads were distributed to commemorate the day, ensuring that the girls had access to essential resources. The celebration didn't stop at discussions; the girls engaged in exciting games, winning various gifts and, most importantly, having a great time.
This International Day of the Girl Child celebration was a testament to the community's commitment to girls' empowerment, education, and overall well-being. It served as a reminder of the importance of advocating for girls' rights and providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive. The event was a resounding success, leaving a positive impact on the lives of the girls in Sabo, Ibadan, and reaffirming the importance of collective efforts to empower and uplift the girl child.
