Why Nigerians Need to Watch Paris 2024
Sports has always had a unique and powerful ability to break barriers and unite people from diverse backgrounds. The feeling of national pride when citizens of a country excel on the international stage is second to none. When people come together to support their favourite teams or athletes, they forget their differences and focus on their shared passion for sports.
We’ve witnessed this show of strengthening national identity countless times, most recently during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Nigerians from different tribes, faiths, and socioeconomic backgrounds came together to cheer for the Super Eagles.
So, what does this have to do with the Olympic games? Well, we have 82 athletes representing Nigeria at the Paris 2024 games scheduled to be held from July 26- August 11. This is another opportunity to revive that feeling of national pride and support our own to achieve amazing feats at the Olympic games. After all the saying is united, we stand, divided we fall, and we need to be united as Nigerians now more than ever.
So get your pom-poms ready to cheer on Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Favour Ashe, and Chukwuebuka Enekwech who will lead the Nigerian track and field team. Additionally, the female basketball team D’Tigress will compete in group B against Australia, Canada, and France.
Other participants include Blessing Oborududu (Women’s 68kg Freestyle Wrestling), Oduanyo Adekuoroye (Women’s 57 kg Freestyle Wrestling), Quadri Aruna (Men’s Table Tennis), Adam Olaore (Men’s 92 kg Heavyweight Boxing), Elizabeth Ayanacho (Women’s 67 kg Taekwondo), Anuoluwapo Opeyori (badminton) and the Supa Falcons.
Other aspects of the Olympics to look out for include The Opening Ceremony, scheduled to take place on the Seine River. The festivities will begin with a boat parade down the Seine on July 26th. The athletes along with coaches, leaders, and staff will make their way from Austerlitz Bridge near Jardin des Plantes finishing at Iéna Bridge in front of Eiffel Tower Trocadéro.
Also, the Olympics for the first time will feature a new sport – Breakdancing! Comprising two events – one man - one woman – with "B-Boys” and "B-Girls” going head-to-head in a solo battle for gold.
You can catch all Olympic action live starting from 6.30 pm on Friday, July 26 on DStv (ch 203) and GOtv (ch 61).
