INEC Chairman Calls for Electoral Reforms at 2-Day Retreat with NASS Committee on Electoral Reform

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has emphasised the importance of electoral reforms during a two-day retreat organised in collaboration with the National Assembly Committee on Electoral Reform.

Professor Yakubu noted that such retreats provide opportunities for more profound engagement than conventional committee hearings, allowing lawmakers to gain firsthand insights into the challenges of election management. He also acknowledged the invaluable support of development partners in promoting Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reform, Senator Abdulazeez Musa Yaradua, affirmed that elections are fundamental to the emergence of leadership that embodies democratic values. He commended the INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu, for the remarkable progress achieved thus far, noting that the current improvements surpass those of previous administrations. Nevertheless, he stressed that much work remains to be done, particularly regarding electoral laws, the misconduct of electoral officers, and the safeguarding of the legal framework to ensure that declared results truly reflect the conscience of the Nigerian people.

Co-Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Reform, Honourable Prince Adebayo Balogun, also addressed the gathering, stating that the retreat offers an invaluable opportunity for reflection and deliberation on charting a progressive course towards strengthening the electoral framework. He underscored the need for a system that promotes credibility, inclusiveness, transparency, and fairness in the electoral process

Honourable Balogun further noted that a key focus of the retreat would be the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022, a landmark regulation that introduced significant milestones in the conduct of elections in Nigeria, notably the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the 2023 general elections. He added that the retreat would facilitate direct engagement with INEC to thoroughly understand the proposed changes and ensure that any amendments align with the ongoing efforts to revise the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The retreat, which commenced on 27th April, will conclude on 29th April.
