Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Commemorates 25 Years of Service with Emblem Unveiling

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced its 25th anniversary celebrations with the formal unveiling of a commemorative emblem, heralding a distinguished new chapter for one of Nigeria’s foremost public service institutions. The auspicious occasion, held at the Authority’s headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos, was graced by eminent stakeholders from the transport sector, civil society, the press, and government, as the agency marked a quarter-century of unwavering commitment to road discipline in Africa’s most populous city.

In a spirited address to the press, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the emblem as a potent symbol of endurance, evolution, and unremitting service to the citizenry of Lagos. “This emblem is more than a mere design; it narrates our journey,” Mr Bakare-Oki remarked. “It captures the legacy of an institution forged by the daily diligence and sacrifice of those who don this uniform with both pride and honour.”

A Legacy Founded Upon Reform

Instituted in the year 2000 under the stewardship of then-Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, LASTMA was conceived as a strategic intervention to address the long-standing traffic gridlock that had beleaguered Lagos for decades. Originating through the issuance of Head of Service Circular HOS/12/2000, the agency has since evolved into a robust and legislatively fortified institution, supported by such enactments as the Lagos Road Traffic Law and the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 (as amended).

Over the course of twenty-five years, LASTMA has become an indispensable element of Lagos State’s urban development and mobility framework. From regulating vehicular flow to educating the public on road safety and responding promptly to traffic incidents, the Authority has garnered commendation for its discipline, innovation, and resolute public service.

From Management to Foresight: A New Paradigm

Beyond the emblem’s unveiling, LASTMA officials announced a series of visionary policies and strategic initiatives, indicative of a paradigmatic shift in traffic governance. Mr Bakare-Oki articulated the Authority’s transformation from a conventional traffic management body into what he described as an “incident management agency”.

These forthcoming undertakings include structured public policy dialogues, expanded community engagement, and ceremonial recognition of exceptional personnel.

In his remarks, Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, lauded the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his sagacious leadership and unflinching support for transport sector reforms. “Were it not for His Excellency’s dedication to innovation and infrastructural development, this landmark celebration would not have come to fruition,” he observed.

A Shared Responsibility for the Future

Looking ahead, both Mr Bakare-Oki and Dr Oladeinde emphasised that the trajectory of traffic management in Lagos rests not solely upon technological progress but upon civic partnership. They enjoined the public to obey traffic regulations and accord LASTMA officers the respect due to their role in maintaining order on the roads.

“The next twenty-five years shall demand even greater trust, innovation, and a sense of mutual responsibility—both from us, the agency, and from the citizens whom we serve,” Mr Bakare-Oki concluded.

The unveiling of the 25th anniversary emblem thus represents far more than a ceremonial milestone—it is a clarion call to collective action and a resolute affirmation that LASTMA stands ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow with poise, preparedness, and purpose.
