Lagos Police Declare Abiodun Ariori Wanted Over Deadly Owode Onirin Market Clash
The Lagos State Police Command has declared Abiodun Ariori, Chief Executive Officer of Prosperous Ariori Golden Venture, wanted for allegedly masterminding a violent clash at the Owode Onirin Market that left three traders dead and disrupted commercial activities along Mile-12 Ikorodu Road.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly stemmed from an attempt by Ariori, a known land speculator, to forcefully take control of a section of the market despite an existing court order mandating all parties to maintain the status quo.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that Ariori led an invasion of the market in defiance of the court ruling, sparking the deadly confrontation between traders and land grabbers.
“He is hereby declared wanted by the Lagos State Police Command as all efforts to effect his arrest and bring him to justice have so far proved abortive. It is very clear that he has gone into hiding,” Hundeyin said in a statement on Tuesday.
The suspect, whose last known address is in the Egbeda area of Lagos, is described as dark in complexion. Police are urging members of the public to report any information regarding his whereabouts to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s control room.
In a related development, four police officers allegedly hired by Ariori from another state to support his illegal operation have been arrested. According to Hundeyin, the officers were immediately identified and detained at the Command Headquarters in Lagos, where they are currently undergoing an orderly room trial for engaging in illegal duty.
“The outcome of the investigation into the case and the trial of the policemen will be made public,” the police spokesperson assured.
To prevent further violence and restore order, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the continued deployment of adequate security personnel to the affected market and surrounding areas.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served in the wake of the deadly attack.
