Lagos State Announces Partial Jetty Closures for E1 Electric Powerboat Championship

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of private and commercial jetties and terminals along the Five Cowries Creek to accommodate the upcoming E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing tournament.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in a statement released through its Public Affairs Unit, confirmed that the closures will be in effect from Thursday, October 2 to Sunday, October 5, 2025. The event is expected to attract global attention as Lagos plays host to a leg of the innovative, eco-friendly sporting competition.

According to the statement, the closure schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, October 2 – Partial closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM
  • Friday, October 3 – Total closure from Oriental Hotel to Mekwen Bridge between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM
  • Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 – Total closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily

Normal ferry and water transport operations are expected to resume on Monday, October 6, 2025.

LASWA emphasized that the temporary restrictions are vital for ensuring safety, security, and the smooth running of the international event. The closures are expected to impact ferry operators, daily commuters, and stakeholders along the waterways, with the government urging the use of alternative routes and advance planning to minimize disruptions.

“The patience and cooperation of waterway users will help Lagos successfully host this historic event and project our city as a world-class hub for international sporting competitions,” LASWA stated.

The E1 Championship will feature elite teams competing with high-performance, all-electric powerboats in a race designed to promote sustainability and innovation in marine sports. Officials describe the event as a milestone in Lagos’ efforts to position itself as a destination for sports tourism and green technology.

Lagos joins a select group of global cities hosting the E1 Championship, further reinforcing its image as a progressive metropolis embracing environmentally responsible innovations.
